This SAL Recommended Practice is intended to provide uniform nomenclature and definitions for the primary levels of vehicle identification, with particular application to trucks. While this specific terminology applies only to trucks, work is in progress to develop supplementary nomenclature and definitions pertaining to other commercial vehicle terms and to terms presently used interchangeably in passenger car, truck, or other commercial vehicle applications. The supplementary terms will be covered in subsequent revisions to this recommended practice.

The purpose of this SAE Recommended Practice is to specify dimensions for loader straight cutting edge cross sections without holes and with bolt holes for mounting bolt-on teeth and tooth adaptors on loader buckets described by SAE J731. This recommended practice is intended to supplement SAE J1303 and SAE J1304 with cross sections for heavier duty applications, by identifying larger blunts, greater bevel angles, larger bolt holes, and greater bolt spacing.

The scope of this SAE Recommended Practice, trailer axle alignment, is to identify the dimensional limits of, and a method to, establish a perpendicular relationship between the king pin centerline and the axle centerline at its midpoint. Various types of equipment are commercially available which can be used for this measurement which provides varying degrees of accuracy, but none can be endorsed by SAE. The most fundamental methods of measurement will be described here, but other equipment is available if a greater degree of accuracy is desired.

This rating method is intended to provide a consistent means of comparing capacities; it is not intended to define actual capacities that might be observed in any specific application.

Note: Some related standards will apply equally to pipelayers and to tractors and loaders with side boom. Two such standards are SAE J743 and ANSI B30.14.

This recommended practice provides minimum requirements for testing components or systems of the type which can be switched from one truck to another with relative ease; i.e., aerodynamic devices, clutch fans, radial tires, and the like. The test utilizes in-service fleet vehicles, operated over representative routes. The relative fuel effectiveness of the component or system under test is determined as a percentage improvement factor. This factor is calculated using the relative fuel usage of like vehicles operating with and without the specific component or system under evaluation. Accuracy capability employing this test technique is either ±1% or ±2%, depending upon the method of fuel measured. (See paragraph 7.4.)
